This treasure trove of rare comic books is set to go under the hammer.
The "holy grail" private collection of every single comic book published by DC from 1934 to 2014.
The more than 40,000 comics in the collection include complete runs of Superman, Batman, Action Comics, and Detective Comics.
The job lot is tipped to sell for millions of pounds.
They also feature superhero icons Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern and Aquaman, as well as the Justice League series.
They were amassed by British DJ Ian Levine - known for his influence on the northern soul music scene.
He first discovered DC comics when he began reading The Justice League of America as an eight-year-old in 1960.
And when he found he could buy out of print issues at London comic shops, it sparked a half-century of comic book collecting.
He tracked down thousands of old issues, but in a pre-internet age he struggled to find key titles and in 1987 he sold most of his comic books to focus on his incomparable collection rare Northern Soul records, according to the auction house.
Richard Austin, Head of Sothebys Books & Manuscripts Department in New York,
said: The Ian Levine Collection is the holy grail for comics collectors. Amassed over decades of hunting, Levines collection embodies the passion and fandom that has defined comics culture for generations, which today is best encapsulated not through printed issues but popular superhero films that regularly break box office records. Featuring some of the most valuable individual books as well as extremely rare promotional issues, the Levine Collection includes all the DC heroes that are among the most recognizable and versatile pop culture touchstones in the world.
DC Complete: The Ian Levine Collection is being sold by Sotheby's in New York.
The sale marks the 81st anniversary of the release of Detective Comics #27 on March 30, 1939, which featured the debut of The Batman.
The earliest comic book in the collection is New Fun: The Big Comic Magazine #1, published in late 1934 by National Allied Publication, the company which went on to become D.C Comics.
And the most significant books in the collections are said to be the Golden Age key titles featuring the debuts of Superman (Action Comics #1, 1938); Batman (Detective Comics #27, 1939); and Wonder Woman (Sensation Comics #1, 1942).
Levines collection also includes the first appearances of iconic characters such as Aquaman, Green Lantern, the Flash, Martian Manhunter and Green Arrow, supervillains Lex Luthor, the Joker, Two Face and the Penguin, and the first team-up of the Justice League of America.
The auction record for a comic was achieved in 2014 when Action Comics #1 sold for $3.2 million USD.
The record foran issue of Detective Comics #27 was reached in 2010 for $1.075 million, according to Sotheby's.
